Curfew remains in force in Leh town for the third consecutive day as security concerns escalate in Ladakh. On Friday, a team from the Union Home Ministry conducted meetings to assess the overall security situation amidst ongoing unrest.
Officials confirmed that no significant incidents were reported from the region during this curfew, which began on Wednesday evening. The enforcement followed widespread protests which tragically claimed four lives, injuring over ninety individuals. Protesters organized the shutdown under the banner of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), demanding statehood and inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Despite the restrictions, the situation across Ladakh has remained largely calm. Authorities indicate that curfew measures might be relaxed later in the day, aiming to facilitate essential activities for residents. Security forces have detained over 50 individuals in connection with the protests, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining order.
Police and paramilitary forces actively patrol the streets to maintain law and order and prevent any attempts to disrupt the peace. District Magistrate Leh, Romil Singh, issued an order for the closure of all government and private educational institutions for two days starting Friday to ensure student safety during this tumultuous period.
A distinguished high-level team from the Ministry of Home Affairs visited Leh on Thursday to obtain firsthand knowledge of the situation, addressing the growing concerns over civil unrest.
Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, Kavinder Gupta, commented on the unrest, stating, “The videos being circulated are deliberate attempts to disturb peace in Ladakh. We cannot allow the future of our youth to be compromised. Any such incidents will be dealt with under a zero-tolerance policy.” His remarks underline the administration’s resolve to address disturbances decisively and maintain stability in the region.
