PM Modi Celebrates RSS Centenary with ₹100 Coin & Bharat Mata Stamp

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during its centenary celebrations on Wednesday, emphasizing the organization’s steadfast commitment to the principle of ‘nation first’ despite numerous challenges over the years.

While speaking at the event, Modi underlined the significant role of the RSS in nation-building and its dedication to promoting harmony by breaking down social barriers rooted in caste and creed. He noted, ‘The Sangh has fought against British atrocities, provided refuge to freedom fighters, and its founder, Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, endured imprisonment multiple times during India’s struggle for independence.’

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the numerous adversities faced by the RSS, such as bans and false accusations. He quoted former RSS chief Madhav Golwalkar, who showed remarkable restraint even in challenging times, stating: ‘At times, the tongue may get caught under the teeth, but we do not break the teeth.’

Reflecting on the organization’s resilience during the Emergency, Modi pointed to two foundational values that have hallmarked swayamsevaks’ approach in crises: oneness with society and faith in constitutional institutions.

To commemorate this historic occasion, PM Modi unveiled a special ₹100 commemorative coin and a postal stamp. The coin depicts the national emblem on one side, and for the first time in independent India, features Bharat Mata illustrated in Varada Mudra, with a lion and swayamsevaks bowing in reverence. The postal stamp showcases the RSS’s involvement in the 1963 Republic Day Parade.

Modi described the release of these issuances as a moment of immense pride, noting, ‘Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency for the first time.’ This statement resonated with many who recognize the significance of cultural symbols in the currency.

Additionally, Modi reminisced about the Sangh’s contributions during critical historical events, including the 1962 Indo-China War, the 1971 refugee crisis, and the 1984 riots. He reiterated the organization’s ongoing commitment to values such as equality, compassion, and unity. Modi particularly highlighted current Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat’s vision for social equality with his call for ‘one well, one temple, one cremation ground’, which aims to diminish discrimination across society.

Dattatreya Hosabale, the general secretary of RSS, expressed gratitude to the government for acknowledging the Sangh’s long-standing service. He termed the newly released coin and stamp as a tribute to the selfless endeavors of swayamsevaks since the organization’s inception in 1925.

The centenary celebrations, marked by PM Modi’s remarks and the unveiling of unique artifacts, highlighted the RSS’s profound impact on Indian society over the last century. This historical recognition intertwines the narrative of the RSS with the larger tapestry of India’s journey towards unity and integrity.
