Geetanjali Angmo Visits Detained Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk in Jodhpur Jail

Geetanjali Angmo, wife of renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, said on Wednesday that she had met her husband at Jodhpur Central Jail, where he has been lodged following the September 24 Leh violence.

In a post on X, Angmo said she visited Wangchuk on Tuesday along with lawyer Ritam Khare. She confirmed that Wangchuk’s legal team has now obtained a copy of his detention order, which will be challenged in court.

According to Angmo, the document details the allegations against Wangchuk and the reasons for invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against him.

Earlier, on Saturday, Wangchuk’s brother Tsetan Dorje had also met him in jail, accompanied by lawyer Mustafa Haji. Following the visit, Haji posted on X that the climate activist has demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the killing of four people during last month’s protest in Leh.

“Wangchuk has expressed his willingness to remain in jail until such an inquiry is conducted,” Haji wrote.

Meanwhile, Angmo has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking her husband’s immediate release. The hearing on the plea is scheduled for October 14.

Wangchuk, a prominent voice for environmental and social causes in Ladakh, was detained under the NSA following violent clashes during a protest demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion of the Union Territory under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

After his detention, he was first taken to Delhi, and later shifted to Jodhpur Central Jail on September 26.
