Senior National Conference (NC) leader and former minister Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo received a hero’s welcome in Kishtwar today after securing a seat in the Rajya Sabha. Thousands of supporters gathered to celebrate this significant victory, marking a pivotal moment for the NC in Jammu and Kashmir.
On his arrival, enthusiastic crowds took out a grand victory rally through Kishtwar’s main market and adjoining localities. Revelers showered Kichloo with garlands and cheered loudly, chanting “NC Zindabad” and “Kichloo Sahab Zindabad.” This overwhelming reception underscored Kichloo’s cherished status within his constituency.
After traversing through various localities filled with jubilant supporters, the rally concluded with resounding victory slogans and celebratory festivities. The atmosphere reflected both excitement and hope among the party faithful.
Notably, the National Conference won three of the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, leaving the BJP with just one. Kichloo and other NC leaders celebrated this outcome as a clear endorsement of their governance policies, viewing it as a decisive rejection of the August 5, 2019 decisions. Those decisions led to the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile State into two Union Territories.
“Today’s victory is a testament to our Government’s policies,” Kichloo declared during his address to the crowd. He criticized the BJP for alleged underhanded tactics, stating, “The BJP believes in horse-trading, employing every means at their disposal to sway votes, rather than showcasing genuine public support.”
He further alleged that some legislators violated their commitments to the NC, opting instead to support the BJP. “We will identify those who backtracked after pledging their votes to us. The NC’s votes remained intact — there was no cross-voting. So where did the BJP’s four extra votes come from?” Kichloo posed, emphasizing transparency and accountability.
His comments reflected a growing concern about the integrity of political operations in the region. Accusing the BJP of employing money and coercive tactics, Kichloo challenged dissenting legislators, saying, “Let those who invalidated their votes or aided the BJP have the courage to admit it. The people will soon know who sold their conscience.”
This victory not only strengthens the National Conference’s position but also raises critical questions about electoral practices in Jammu and Kashmir. Observers consider Kichloo’s win a significant milestone in the ongoing political discourse in the region, where challenges to democracy are intensifying.
The festive reception in Kishtwar symbolizes a hopeful signal for the National Conference as it seeks to reaffirm its influence within Jammu and Kashmir’s dynamic political landscape. Amidst rising political tensions, Kichloo’s successful return to the Rajya Sabha illuminates the importance of grassroots support in overcoming broader political challenges.
