In a significant update, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, stated that there is no shortage of food grains in the Keran and Jamgund areas of Kupwara district. His remarks came during a session in the Legislative Assembly responding to concerns raised by MLA Mir Saifullah.
MLA Saifullah expressed worry regarding the availability of essential food grains in these remote regions, particularly during the harsh winter months when heavy snowfall cuts off access for nearly six months. He urged action to ensure that residents in these far-flung areas do not face shortages.
Addressing these concerns, Minister Sharma provided a detailed assurance to the Assembly. He confirmed that the government implements a proactive strategy to ensure the supply of food grains in advance for various schemes. This initiative aims to cover the period of November to June, which coincides with the onset of winter road closures.
Statistics shared by Minister Sharma reinforced his statements. For the Jamgund area, against a needed 536.14 quintals of food grains for the November 2025 to June 2026 period, the government has already delivered the entire required quantity. This timely delivery aligns with the government’s strategy to facilitate uninterrupted access to essential commodities even during severe winter conditions.
In the case of Keran, the scenario appears equally reassuring. The area requires 2774.43 quintals of food grains, and so far, 800 quintals have reached the designated locations. An additional 346.80 quintals has been pre-positioned adequately to prepare for winter challenges.
“The remaining quantity will be transported and stocked by or before October 31, 2025,” emphasized Sharma. This proactive measure ensures that food supplies remain consistent and reliable for all border regions in Jammu and Kashmir, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting these communities.
The minister’s responses reflect a strong commitment to safeguarding the interests of residents in remote areas, ensuring no family goes hungry even during winter’s harshest months. His assurances mark an important step in addressing MLA Saifullah’s concerns while highlighting the government’s logistical preparedness in challenging terrains.
This news not only reassures the residents of Keran and Jamgund but also emphasizes the importance of effective governance in ensuring food security, particularly in geographically challenging areas of the state.
