Srinagar Chills at -2.1°C: Coldest Night This Winter

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded the coldest night of the season with temperatures plummeting to minus 2.1°C, according to the Meteorological Department (MeT). This chilling dip marks a significant drop as the Valley braces for winter conditions.

The MeT department noted that Pahalgam, another prominent location in the region, reported an even lower temperature of minus 3.8°C. The relentless cold has raised concerns among residents, especially as the mercury has consistently hovered below freezing.

Director of the MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, emphasized that the weather forecast does not indicate any impending wet spells over the coming week. He stated, “The night temperatures are likely to remain unchanged until November 17.” Dr. Ahmad mentioned that a slight increase in night temperatures might occur after November 17, lasting for two to three days. This projection offers a glimmer of relief for residents feeling the brunt of the cold.

The sharp decline in temperatures has led to frost formation in various parts of Srinagar and across the Valley, igniting concerns over agriculture and daily life as the region confronts its harsh winter. Families have begun preparing for the colder months ahead, adjusting their heating systems and ensuring their homes are winter-ready.

Cold weather not only impacts daily life but also raises health concerns. Vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and young children, are at increased risk during such low temperatures. Community leaders advocate for heightened awareness regarding health precautions during this period.

The distinct chill in the air signifies that winter has well and truly arrived in Kashmir, a season that brings both beauty and stark challenges. Residents are encouraged to stay informed on the latest Met forecasts to better prepare for the colder weeks ahead.
