When cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal stepped into court for his final divorce hearing from Dhanashree Verma, it wasn’t just the legal proceedings that grabbed attention. It was his T-shirt. Impossible to miss, it read: “Be Your Own Sugar Daddy.”
The statement immediately went viral, sparking a storm of reactions on social media. But while the world had plenty to say, Dhanashree stayed silent, until now.
Nearly a month after Chahal’s public comments on their separation, Dhanashree opened up about the emotional rollercoaster behind the headlines. She joined the popular Humans of Bombay podcast on YouTube to share her side of the story, revealing that the courtroom experience was far more intense than anyone outside could imagine.
Reflecting on the final hearing, Dhanashree admitted she had an emotional breakdown. “I still remember standing there, waiting for the verdict. Even though we were so mentally prepared, I just lost it. I started howling in front of everybody. I couldn’t even express what I was feeling. I just kept crying,” she recounted, her voice raw with honesty. “And, of course, he walked out first.”
Dhanashree explained that the ‘Be your own sugar daddy’ t-shirt, while humorous to some, felt like a public spectacle to her. “If he really wanted to convey something, he should have done it privately,” she said. “Making it a public statement, it caught everyone off guard.”
Dhanashree candidly admitted she had already braced herself for the social media fallout. “You know people are going to blame you. Before I even knew about the T-shirt, I was aware that people would point fingers at me,” she said.
Recalling her initial reaction, she laughed at her own surprise. “I remember seeing the videos after leaving the court. I thought, ‘Are bhai, WhatsApp kar deta. T-shirt kyun pehna hai?’”, essentially, “You could have just sent a message instead of wearing a T-shirt.”
