GMC Doda NICU Triumphs with Management of Heavy Newborn

In a remarkable achievement, the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda’s Department of Pediatrics effectively managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth, marking one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at this medical institution. The baby, delivered on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM, was born to a diabetic mother and initially experienced severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life.

Upon recognizing the critical condition of the infant, the medical team immediately admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized care. The large-for-gestational-age status heightened concerns, prompting the initiation of specialized neonatal respiratory support. The NICU team monitored the baby’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity with meticulous attention.

Over the subsequent days, the infant displayed positive responses to the interventions, gradually allowing for the weaning of respiratory support. The intensive care efforts culminated in the final 72 hours before discharge, during which the baby maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation. Notably, there were no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation during this critical period.

After demonstrating significant clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in good health, with standard follow-up consultations recommended for continued monitoring. This achievement was facilitated under the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of the Pediatrics Department. The successful case also received oversight from faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, alongside the dedicated contributions from the senior and junior residents.

The team’s success hinged on the vigilant monitoring and empathetic care provided by the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda. Their unwavering commitment proved vital in supporting the newborn’s recovery journey.

This significant milestone not only showcases the growing neonatal expertise within the Pediatrics Department at GMC Doda but also reflects the institution’s continued commitment to offering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children across the region.
