Jammu’s Ravinder Singh Wins Gold at ISSF Championships

Naib Subedar Ravinder Singh, a 29-year-old ace shooter from the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) in Mhow, made headlines after clinching a gold medal in the Men’s 50m Free Pistol event at the ISSF World Championships held in Egypt. His impressive victory earned him a hero’s welcome in his hometown of Bishnah.

Competing against 47 top shooters from around the world, including seasoned competitors, Ravinder demonstrated exceptional skill and composure throughout the championship. Starting with a modest score of 93 in his first series, he showcased his mental fortitude by staging a remarkable comeback. He shot series scores of 98, 94, 95, 93, and a brilliant 96, culminating in a total of 569 points. This stellar performance allowed him to secure victory, outpacing South Korea’s Kim Cheongyong (556) for the silver and Individual Neutral Athlete Anton Aristarkhov (556) for the bronze.

Ravinder’s triumph becomes even more remarkable considering he had been away from training for over two weeks due to the joyous occasion of his daughter’s birth. He managed only about 4–5 days of focused practice before the championship, making his win a testament to his discipline and resilience.

Notably, Ravinder also contributed to India’s success in the team event, helping secure a silver medal in the 50m Free Pistol competition. Alongside teammates Kamaljeet (540) and Yogesh Kumar (537), they achieved a combined score of 1646 points, narrowly missing gold by just two points against South Korea.

Earlier this year, Ravinder earned a silver medal at the National Games, and his recent victory has only added to his accolades. Upon his arrival back in Bishnah, he expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support he received during his journey, stating, “It’s not my personal achievement but for all those who stood behind me. I am thankful to my family and the Army for their support.”

Ravinder’s achievement has not gone unnoticed. Former MLA Ashwani Kumar Sharma praised him as a role model for the youth, inspiring countless young Indians to pursue excellence in sports. Hundreds of residents filled the streets of Bishnah, celebrating this historic victory and demonstrating their pride in Ravinder’s accomplishments. His gold medal not only elevates his status as an athlete but also honors his community and the nation.

The ISSF World Championships serve as a significant platform for shooters worldwide, and Ravinder Singh’s performance stands out as a defining moment for Indian shooting sports. His dedication encapsulates the spirit of perseverance and excellence, making him a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes.
