Leh Shutdown Clashes Leave Four Dead, 30 Injured in Protests

Four people died and 30 others sustained injuries in violent clashes during a shutdown in Leh, Ladakh, on Wednesday. The protests, organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), demanded statehood for Ladakh along with the extension of the Sixth Schedule.

The unrest escalated as crowds clashed with security personnel, prompting the police to use live ammunition to restore order. Witnesses reported that the situation turned chaotic, with protesters attacking a BJP office and vandalizing various vehicles in the vicinity.

Authorities stipulated that the situation became critical when protesters engaged in violent acts after two hunger strikers, part of a 35-day protest for statehood, were hospitalized on Tuesday evening.

The LAB youth wing called for the shutdown following the deteriorating health of these activists, intensifying demands for political representation. Among the injured, a high number are reported to be protesters, leading to rising tensions within the community.

Police attributed the deaths and injuries to the violent behavior of the crowds during the protests. According to officials, the protesters also accused the police of resorting to extreme measures, claiming that the fatalities resulted from police firing.

The protests have drawn attention to long-standing grievances for statehood and autonomy. With the situation still evolving, officials urged calm while reaffirming their commitment to maintain law and order.

In recent months, the push for Ladakhi statehood has gained traction, fueled by local frustrations over perceived neglect from the central government. Many residents believe that achieving statehood will address local issues more effectively. This scenario reflects deep-rooted aspirations among the people of Ladakh to have significant control over their governance.

The protests have platforms prepared with little tolerance for suppression, igniting a cycle of unrest echoed throughout the region. As Ladakh’s unique cultural identity comes into sharper focus, community leaders continue to press for recognition of their demands amidst fears of further violence.

Onlookers point to the need for dialogue and resolution among all stakeholders, advocating for peaceful discussions that can pave the way towards a stable future for the region.
