Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sanctioned and released ₹30.14 crore for direct online transfers to eligible beneficiaries under various welfare schemes aimed at supporting construction workers in Jammu and Kashmir. The announcement comes amid Abdullah’s expression of grief following a tragic bus accident involving Indian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.
During the recent executive meeting of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), Abdullah confirmed that the **sanctioned amount** will be allocated to all Assistant Labour Commissioners for immediate transfer into the bank accounts of registered construction workers.
According to the Labour Department, this financial assistance caters to several flagship welfare schemes, which include:
- Education support
- Disability assistance
- Aid for chronic illness
- Support for next of kin of deceased workers
- Marriage assistance
- Meritorious awards for children of registered workers
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of extending welfare measures to all construction workers during the 22nd meeting of JKBOCWWB in July. He urged for an inclusive definition of ‘construction worker’ that encompasses all vulnerable labourers in the unorganised sector.
He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to exploring innovative policy mechanisms aimed at enhancing financial security for workers and aligning the Board’s operations with national best practices in labour welfare.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated. He reiterated his government’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding labour rights and dignity.
CM Expresses Grief Over Bus Accident in Saudi Arabia
In a separate yet poignant announcement, Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident that occurred involving a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims in Medina, Saudi Arabia, early this morning.
He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries in this unfortunate event.
Initial reports indicate that a bus carrying 46 Indian pilgrims collided with a tanker while en route from Mecca to Medina. The catastrophic accident resulted in the deaths of 45 pilgrims, leaving only one survivor who sustained serious injuries.
The state government stands ready to assist the victims’ families and offer necessary support during this heartbreaking time.
