Satish Sharma Seeks Enhanced Sports Infrastructure for J&K

In a pivotal meeting held in New Delhi, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, engaged with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, on October 20, 2023. The discussion centered on improving sports infrastructure, fostering youth engagement, and enhancing athletic performance in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharma presented a comprehensive memorandum outlining the J&K Government’s dedication to transforming the region into a lively hub for sports and youth empowerment. This memorandum contains crucial proposals aimed at infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and grassroots participation, aligning with both the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022.

During the meeting, Sharma sought assistance from the Union Government to expedite the creation of world-class sports facilities. Key requests included establishing the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence at Gulmarg, modernizing district stadiums to incorporate all-weather infrastructure, and developing sports amenities at the panchayat level to provide equitable access for rural youth.

Sharma emphasized the significance of expanding Khelo India grassroots programs and increasing scholarship and financial aid for aspiring athletes. He advocated for the integration of sports science and physiotherapy into training systems and suggested forming public-private partnerships (PPP) to optimize the management of sports infrastructure.

To bolster sports-linked tourism and enhance global exposure, Sharma recommended organizing international winter sports events in Gulmarg. He aims to position Jammu and Kashmir as a leading destination for winter and adventure sports.

Additionally, Sharma urged the expedited release of ₹103.82 crore under Khelo India to complete essential sports infrastructure projects. These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to nurturing sports talent and providing quality facilities.

In response, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya assured that the government will soon frame a dedicated policy for promoting rural sports. He also confirmed that funds for sports equipment will be allocated to support ongoing and future initiatives aimed at enhancing sports in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting signifies a crucial step in advancing sports in the region, with a focus on empowering the youth and fostering a culture of athletic excellence.
