Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Tariq Hameed Karra called for a thorough judicial investigation into the Leh violence of September 24, which claimed the lives of four individuals. Karra proposed that a sitting High Court judge should oversee the probe or, if that is infeasible, a retired judge of high repute. He delivered these remarks on Thursday while addressing reporters.
Karra stated, “What transpired in Leh must not be allowed to repeat itself, but an inquiry is essential. If a sitting High Court judge cannot be appointed swiftly, then the investigation should be assigned to a credible retired judge.” His statements underscore the urgency for accountability following the tragic events in Leh.
In a somber moment, Karra paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their respective birth anniversaries. He reflected on their leadership, ideology, and commitment to a self-reliant India, asserting that their philosophies continue to inspire globally, even being recognized at the United Nations.
Discussing the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections, he remarked that the Congress party’s central leadership will decide on seat-sharing and alliances. He noted the appointment of senior leader Digvijay Singh as the party’s observer, suggesting a strategic approach towards upcoming electoral challenges.
Addressing the situation of Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, Karra asserted that Malik should be permitted to attend the upcoming Assembly session. He emphasized, “Even Engineer Rashid attended Parliament while he was incarcerated in Tihar Jail. By the same logic, Mehraj Malik should have the same opportunity.” This statement pointedly advocates for the rights of legislators, regardless of their political affiliations or legal circumstances.
The demand for a judicial probe comes at a crucial time, as the region grapples with tensions and calls for peace and justice echo among its citizens. The need for transparent investigations in cases of violence is paramount to restore trust between the government and the public.
As the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir continues to evolve, the actions taken regarding the Leh violence will be pivotal in shaping public perception and the Congress party’s position in the region. The upcoming **Rajya Sabha elections** present another opportunity for political players like Karra to assert their influence and advocate for leadership that prioritizes justice and integrity.
