President Donald Trump has paused “Project Freedom” as he claims significant progress in negotiations with Iran toward a final agreement. The announcement came on Tuesday via a post on Truth Social, following a series of military actions in the area.
On Truth Social, Trump stated, “Great progress has been made toward a complete and final agreement with representatives of Iran.” This pause indicates a shift in strategy concerning the United States’ military presence in the region.
“Based on the request of Pakistan and other countries, we have mutually agreed to suspend Project Freedom, which aims to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump added. The Strait is a crucial waterway through which one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.
Launched recently, Project Freedom faced immediate challenges. The operation aimed to escort ships stranded due to the blockade, initiated right after Trump announced the plan on Sunday.
However, tensions escalated in the area with reports of attacks on UAE vessels allegedly by Iranian forces. The United States also confirmed the destruction of several Iranian small boats involved in these conflicts.
Trump’s update closely followed remarks by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who earlier announced the conclusion of Operation Epic Fury. Rubio noted that the operation has achieved its objectives, emphasizing a preference for peace over ongoing military engagement.
“We’re not cheering for an additional situation to occur. What @POTUS would prefer is a deal,” Rubio stated during a press briefing on Tuesday.
Regarding Project Freedom, Rubio explained the operation aimed to rescue nearly 23,000 civilians from 87 different countries who had been left vulnerable by the Iranian regime. “This is not an offensive operation but a defensive one,” he clarified, underlining that military force would only be used if provoked.
This pause presents an opportunity for diplomatic efforts to take precedence over military action in the contentious region. As both the US and Iran engage in discussions, the global gaze remains firmly fixed on how these developments will unfold.
In conclusion, with the suspension of Project Freedom, President Trump suggests hope for a peaceful resolution and collaboration in the region. The upcoming days will be crucial in determining whether these negotiations lead to a formal agreement.
