Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted a significant transformation in voter participation in West Bengal during his address on Wednesday. With elections underway, he noted that voters are casting their ballots in a “fearless atmosphere” that had been unimaginable over the past six to seven decades.
Voting in the second and final phase is currently taking place across 142 constituencies of West Bengal. Modi pointed out that the polls are a crucial milestone in the festival of democracy that India celebrates.
“Today marks an important day as voting for the second phase is underway in Bengal. Early reports suggest massive turnout, with citizens eagerly stepping out to vote, mirroring the enthusiasm seen in the first phase,” Modi stated. He emphasized that long queues at polling stations are evident across social media platforms, reflecting the people’s desire to exercise their democratic right.
According to Modi, the current atmosphere in West Bengal represents an unprecedented shift. “What we are witnessing in Bengal today is absolutely remarkable. It is a fearless environment where people are voting without fear, which we could hardly have imagined decades ago,” he asserted.
He noted that this mood of fearless voting symbolizes the resilience of the Indian Constitution and the empowerment of democracy in the country. The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the citizens of Bengal for their awareness regarding their rights and their active participation in the electoral process.
“I am thankful to the great people of Bengal for being so proactive and engaged in this democratic exercise,” Modi concluded, emphasizing the importance of strong voter turnout in the assembly elections scheduled to conclude on May 4.
This year’s elections in West Bengal are pivotal as they not only affect the state’s political landscape but also serve as a barometer for the national political ethos. With voter turnout reflecting newfound courage among the electorate, the results will signal a shift that could further reinforce India’s democratic fabric and its journey towards development.
